Active Reading Strategies

Students are frequently asked to prove their learning by writing about the informational text they are reading. Because grade-level text is difficult for some students, the assignments sometimes feel like an impossible challenge. During this free 60 minute webinar, we will examine three active reading strategies: highlighting, annotating text, and note taking that improve student comprehension and retention of informational text. We'll provide easy tools for introducing these strategies to students in any content area, as well as examples from a variety of ages and courses. This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity for all teachers that use text to help students learn content. Sign up today with the email address of the computer you will be using during the webinar.

The_Write_Tools_Persuasive_Writing.wmv

The genre of persuasive writing frequently appears on writing assessments, and is embedded in state standards at various grade levels. Students are natural-born persuaders, yet don’t realize how easy it is to combine their persuasive skills with what they already know about expository writing. This training session will give an overview of persuasive writing—what it is and isn’t, planning strategies, and how to analyze persuasive writing.

Personal Narrative Writing

In this training session, we will focus on writing that helps students tell the important stories from their own lives. Many of the prompts on external assessments ask for a personal narrative. Attend this session to learn the importance of teaching this genre, the characteristics of proficient personal narrative writing, and how to connect the writing to the student's reading.

 Primary_Writing.wmv

This webinar led by Nancy Conway, will cover the common benchmarks for students in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade based on Nancy's vast experience in her own classroom and working with teachers and students in schools around the country. Nancy is often asked by primary teachers, "What is normal for kids to be able to do in this grade?" Listen to hear her answers.
